NEW YORK — I must be turning into a softy as I approach my 1-millionth birthday, because I actually felt sorry for Anthony Volpe on Thursday. News of his partially torn labrum will likely keep him on the bench during the playoffs and casts doubt about his future in the Bronx .

Volpe is a sincere, hard-working player who is regarded as the little brother in the clubhouse. He’s impossible to dislike. But he hasn’t been a very good ballplayer this year, and now we know one reason why.
