An Alameda County judge on Friday set a trial date for a former police officer charged in the shooting death of a San Leandro man.

The judge decided the Alameda County District Attorney will prosecute the case against former San Leandro police officer Jason Fletcher, instead of the state Attorney General’s Office, in the 2020 shooting death of Steven Taylor.

The judge also agreed to hear a motion by the defense to dismiss the case on Oct. 31.

In April 2020, Fletcher shot and killed the 33-year-old Taylor during a confrontation inside a Walmart store, according to authorities. Taylor was wielding a baseball bat at the time of the shooting, police said.

Taylor’s family says he suffered from mental illness, and the officer failed to try to de-escalate the situation.
