Edmonton police have charged a 42-year-old man with extortion after a local business owner received threatening messages through WhatsApp.

On Aug. 27, city investigators were contacted by a local business owner claiming they were receiving threatening messages from an unknown number, including demands that the owner pay the sender more than $100,000, police said in a Friday news release.

Police said the messages included “detailed knowledge of the victim’s business and home address” and that the sender claimed he was surveilling the business owner and their family, threatening to harm them if the money was not paid.
