Gusty northeast winds will create a high risk for dangerous rip currents along the Outer Banks from Cape Hatteras northward on Saturday. The Southern Outer Banks are highlighted as having a moderate risk of rip currents. The Crystal Coast is at a lower risk of rip currents.
If you’re heading to the beach, keep these tips in mind:
Swim only near staffed lifeguard stations—they’re trained to spot trouble before it starts.
Look for the beach warning flags. A red flag means stay out of the water.
Never swim alone. Always go in with a buddy and let someone on shore know your location.
If caught in a rip current, don’t panic. Swim parallel to the shore until you’re out of the current, then make your way back in.
