WASHINGTON — Nintendo has officially announced the sequel to the record-breaking "Super Mario Bros. Movie," showing the first glimpses of the movie, which is set to release next year.

The sequel is titled "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie," and features visual elements from the popular "Super Mario Galaxy" platformers.

The news was announced Friday, a day before the 40th anniversary of the release of the first Super Mario Bros. game in 1985.

The Nintendo Direct livestream kicked off with the teaser, which showed Mario sleeping under a tree near Princess Peach's castle, followed by quick shots of a number of beloved characters and enemies, including Monty Mole, Cheep Cheeps and Toads. The nearly minute-long teaser ends with the character Luma, a living star, and the movie's title card.
