Hundreds of supporters gathered on the steps of the Montana State Capitol Friday to mourn the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Kirk, a close ally of President Donald Trump who played an influential role in rallying young Republican voters, died on Wednesday after he was shot during a speaking event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. Authorities have arrested Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old Utah man, in connection with Kirk's death.

Many speakers at the Capitol event were those young conservatives motivated by Kirk to enter politics, including state Rep. Braxton Mitchell, R- Columbia Falls. Mitchell is an ambassador for Kirk’s political organization and has referenced Kirk as a “friend” on social media in recent days.
