ANDERSON COUNTY, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - A fire engine that played a pivotal role in rescue efforts on 9/11 is still saving lives in the Upstate.
At 9:37 a.m. on Sept. 11 2001—shortly after two hijacked planes crashed into the Twin Towers in New York City—American Airlines Flight 77, carrying 53 passengers and six crew members, crashed into the west side of the Pentagon.
Minutes later, the Arlington County Fire Department responded. Anderson County Fire Chief Jimmy Sutherland said Ladder 109 was the first engine to arrive on scene.
“It’s an aerial truck, so it probably used the ladder to rescue [lives], putting it on the building,” Sutherland said. “It could have been used for aerial ops.”
