CAZENOVIA, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) -- Fall is in the air and at Critz Farms, so are the sights and smells of apple season.

Apple picking season opens this Saturday, Sept. 13 at Critz Farms.

"We have about nine or 10 different varieties, this weekend we'll start with Cortlands, Macs [Macintoshes], some of these Liberties," said Matthew Critz, co-owner of Critz Farms.

Critz says this year's harvest shaped up to be one of the best.

"We're very pleased with the apples we have to work with this year," the apple farmer said.

But just a few months ago, that wasn't a sure thing. Extreme heat in July had farmers, including Critz, bracing for the worst.

"Right in the middle of July during the heat wave and when it was really dry we had a rain storm that gave us two inches of rain at just the right time
