BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (WNDU) - Benton Harbor school board trustees might be endorsing a proposed amendment to the Michigan Constitution.
The amendment would raise money for schools if approved by voters.
According to our reporting partners at The Herald-Palladium , the “Invest in MI Kids” ballot petition would impose a 5% fair share surcharge on annual taxable income over $1 million for joint filers and over $500,000 for single filers.
The money would be used for career and technical education to reduce class sizes as well as recruiting and retaining teachers.
Supporters of the initiative are gathering signatures in an attempt to put it before voters next year.
If approved, the surcharge would go into effect in 2027.
