WACO, Texas — A federal program that promised to bring free solar panels to low-income homes, including 150 in Waco , has been eliminated by the new administration.

The Solar for All grant program, designed to install rooftop solar panels for the homes of low-income families, while creating jobs through worker training, was terminated.

Eric Coffman, sustainability programs manager for the City of Waco, said the program would have provided solar installations at no cost to qualifying families, with each household saving an average of nearly $500 per year on electric bills.

"The program requirements required a minimum of 20% bill savings for anybody that has those solar panels," Coffman explained. "We were looking at an average of close to $500 per bill per year of savings."
