HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Supporters of Kamehameha Schools gathered for a rally at the Hawaii State Capitol Friday.

State Sen. Kurt Fevella organized the sign waving and press conference in response to a recent challenge to the school’s admissions policy for favoring Native Hawaiians.

The policy comes from the legacy of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop.

Supporters of Kamehameha Schools’ 140-year-old admissions policy say it was created to address generations of social and economic injustice.

“We will not stand idle while outside forces attempt to rewrite the legacy of Princess Pauahi,” Fevella said. “This policy was created to address generations of social and economic injustice, and we will stand shoulder-to-shoulder to defend it.”
