When speaking at the US Chamber of Commerce's annual summit in Washington D.C., Southwest Airlines CEO Bob Jordan outlined an ambitious vision for a Southwest that hardly resembles the airline that we know today. Most notably, Southwest is looking at long-haul flights, airport lounges, and even possibly adding widebody aircraft to the fleet.
Southwest currently operates all short-haul flights using Boeing 737 aircraft. While this has always been the carrier's M.O., it's significantly overhauled many aspects of its business and operating model over the past year. The carrier is now under the control of Elliott Investment Management, which is seeking to improve Southwest's short-term profits by emulating legacy carriers.
