It’s one of the small details that thousands of drivers see every day, but barely anyone actually notices it. In fact, despite its visibility, around 10 million UK drivers admitted they have no idea what this secret icon means. ‌

A tiny arrow situated next to the fuel pump icon which lights up on most cars' dashboards when the vehicle is low in petrol or diesel. That arrow shows drivers, it points left or right, which side of the car their fuel flap is on and can save them having to move in the petrol station. ‌

A recent survey revealed that 29 per cent admitted they have no idea what it means, and around 4.9 million drivers have driven up to the petrol pump, only to forget which side they should be filling up at. ‌
