MILWAUKEE — The knee pain that has interrupted Masyn Winn's attempt to play throughout the past week has brought an end to his season.

The Cardinals and their shortstop elected Friday to bring an end to his season so that Winn can have the necessary surgery to alleviate the pain in his right knee, manager Oli Marmol announced after the team's 8-2 loss to Milwaukee . Winn will have arthroscopic surgery in the near future to clean up the damage to the meniscus in his right knee.

Winn said earlier in the week that he wanted to play through the pain, and he privately had the goal of trying to appear in the final home stand of the season.
