Outrage has engulfed Stephen King after the 77-year-old writer targeted Charlie Kirk’s legacy with a post many called “heinously false” in the wake of the conservative activist’s assassination.

The novelist responded to Fox host Jesse Watters’ description of Kirk as “not a controversial or polarising figure” but “a PATRIOT” by writing: “He advocated stoning gays to death. Just sayin’.”

Within hours, the backlash was ferocious.

“You are a horrible, evil, twisted liar. No, he did not,” Senator Ted Cruz said on X, branding King “dishonest and full of hate”.

Others leapt to Kirk’s defence by pointing out he had consistently argued that gay people were welcome in the conservative movement.

Kirk’s close friend Dave Rubin told King: “Charlie was never anything but kind to me and my husband.
