Culicoides, otherwise known as notorious biting midges, are between 1 to 3 millimeters long or 1/8 of an inch, which basically qualifies them as “no-see-ums” since they are much smaller than flies and mosquitoes.
But what a wallop these miniscule insects can pack when their bite infects the deer herd like what happened during Ohio’s Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease outbreak in fall of 2024. Some hunters reported the woods smelling practically like that of the carnage of war because there were so many deer carcasses piling up from the viral disease’s wrath.
EHD comes in two varieties: that of EHD or bluetongue virus. It is not passed on from deer to deer nor is it known to be communicable to humans. It is often fatal to deer and other ruminants with no known cure other than a hard frost that
