More than a year after its conception, a home-sharing program is seeing success connecting homeowners with extra room and renters seeking affordable housing.

HomeShare Clark County , which takes inspiration from the Oregon chapter , runs background checks and facilitates conversations about what each person is looking for in a roommate.

Rising costs hit older adults on fixed incomes and young people the hardest.

“Home sharing is an avenue to help with that,” said Deanna Eichler, co-chair of HomeShare Clark County. “Our focus is self-resiliency. We want people to stay in their homes, and we want to help people in the community afford housing.”

HomeShare’s approach doesn’t involve building more housing or tweaking any zoning laws. Instead, it uses existing resources.
