A Metairie woman died early Saturday after her SUV hit a concrete support pillar under the Causeway Boulevard overpass, according to Louisiana State Police.

At around 12:45 a.m., state troopers investigated a single-vehicle crash on I-10 west at the Causeway Boulevard exit in Jefferson Parish. Selenta James, 49, had been driving a 2022 Nissan Murano on the Causeway Boulevard exit from I-10 west when she veered off the road and into the grass.

Troopers said James appeared to be experiencing a "medical emergency." As they tried to get into the Nissan, James accelerated and hit a concrete support pillar. She wasn't wearing a seat belt and sustained serious injuries, later dying at a hospital, state police said.

This crash remains under investigation.
