Finals are decided by big moments, and Hawthorn midfielder Karl Amon believes his side can muster enough of them to win their first preliminary final in a decade.

Moments after picking up a handy 17 disposals and a goal in the Hawks' semi-final demolition of Adelaide on Friday night, Amon was already anticipating playing arch rivals Geelong at a packed MCG.

"The Cats are a super team and prelims are massive games," Amon told AAP.

"It's going to be decided by moments. And they're flying at the moment, so it's going be another great challenge."

Reflecting on Friday night's win, he said Adelaide were a "super contest team".

"They obviously had a disappointing loss last week but we knew they were going to respond," he said.

"But we fully believe in our system and it held up.
