Since I was born, the United States has racked up 24.3 trillion new dollars in additional debt.

Now to just show what that truly means, I’m only a 16-year-old junior in high school. That is an absolutely mind-boggling amount of money in a short amount of time. The national debt has just reached a staggering $37 trillion, and is still climbing.

Every day that pile of debt grows that much bigger that much quicker. That number is so big that the interest payments on that debt are larger than the entire allocated military budget.

Now it’s not as if we can’t do anything about it. We could balance the budget and let the economy grow into scaling down the debt. That would be the safest way to approach this growing problem. We could default on our debt and say we can’t pay it back.
