Hamilton, N.Y. — What started as a Sunday afternoon of smoked ribs, corn on the cob and Steelers football turned into a nightmare for the Frederick family when their “forever home” caught fire in Madison County.

Brandon Frederick said he started smoking ribs in his electric smoker around 7 a.m. last Sunday in the garage to enjoy a nice meal later in the day with his wife Hannah and their two daughters.

Around 1 p.m., Hannah stepped onto their front porch to walk a friend out of their home and spotted flames climbing the side of the garage. At first, she froze.

“My hands just wouldn’t work,” she said. “I went to dial 911 and couldn’t even move my fingers. I’ve never felt that kind of shock in my body before.”
