Manchester City paid a heartfelt tribute to boxing legend Ricky Hatton before the Manchester derby, following his untimely death at the age of 46. Hatton, a lifelong City supporter, was expected to attend the match at the Etihad Stadium, but the news of his passing emerged just hours before kick-off.

In a statement, Manchester City expressed their devastation, describing Hatton as “an icon of British boxing” and one of their “most loved supporters.” The club held a minute’s applause before the match, with players and fans from both Manchester City and Manchester United participating in the tribute. City’s statement highlighted Hatton’s deep connection to the club, noting that he wore sky blue shorts and used the song "Blue Moon" as his walkout music throughout his boxing career.

City midfielder Phil Foden shared his shock at the news, stating, “My heart obviously goes out to his family, at this hard time. Obviously to hear the news just before a big game is devastating. I’m sure he would have been here today as well, supporting us. Today is for him and we’re going to try to get the win and do the best we can for him.”

Manager Pep Guardiola also expressed his condolences, saying, “For all of the Manchester City family, it was tough. Of course (there was) the success, world champion… but the loss for his family, his kids, he was a grandad, so always you think about that.” He added, “On behalf of Man City and all the people, we wish (the family) comfort in these incredibly tough hours, tough days, tough weeks. A big, big loss for them, for the boxing world, because he was a truly great champion, and of course for the Man City family.”

Former City captain Vincent Kompany shared a tribute on social media, posting a picture of himself with Hatton and musician Liam Gallagher, stating, “We’ll miss you Ricky. Our thoughts are with the family and friends. Rest in peace legend.” The emotional tribute resonated throughout the stadium, as fans and players alike remembered one of Manchester’s most beloved sports figures.
