From Ilona Irvine opening the show with “Hawaii Pono’i” at 5:30 on the dot, to the improvised song-and-dance jam session that closed it more than four hours later, the long-anticipated Fiji Tribute Concert lived up to the hopes of the concert promoters, the City & County of Honolulu, and the thousands of Fiji fans who come out to share their love and aloha for the late George “Fiji” Veikoso SATURDAY/SEPT. 13 at the Tom Moffatt Waikiki Shell. There were the 8100 who had scored free tickets for seating inside the Shell, and then there were the more than 20,000 who had free tickets for the enclosed viewing area with giant video screens and concert-quality sound outside the Shell in Kapiolani Park. The combined total made the concert the biggest one-day concert event in Shell history.
