WEST GARDINER, Maine — A Winslow man safely escaped his car Sunday morning after he drove off Interstate 295 and plunged into Cobbosseecontee Stream, according to Maine State Police.

Police said the crash was reported around 7 a.m. near the West Gardiner/Gardiner line, where a 2020 Audi sedan headed southbound went off the road, struck a sign and concrete barrier, and launched into the stream.

Trooper Tom Bureau quickly responded to the scene, where witnesses said that the vehicle had gone into the water and had not been seen since the crash.

Bureau swam about seven feet down into the stream in attempt to reach the car, but was unable to open its doors because of oil in the water, police said. He remained in the water for roughly five minutes trying to gain access before he learned the
