Potential tropical development in the Gulf poses a significant and immediate threat to the United States before the end of September.

The Gulf of Mexico is the primary area of concern for tropical development over the next couple of weeks. Record-high ocean heat content and other factors could lead to a rapidly intensifying storm with very little time for coastal residents to prepare.

AccuWeather Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva states that the western Caribbean and Gulf will be “monitored closely starting around Sept. 18, continuing through at least the end of September.” Any storm that forms in this region would leave coastal residents with the least amount of preparation time.
