The celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month officially begins Monday, but Hispanic heritage and culture are woven into the daily life of all New Mexicans.

As always, Hispanic Heritage Month begins Sept. 15 instead of the 1st of the month for a historical reason. That was the date of the start of the Mexican War of Independence, which led decolonization of Mexico and the rest of Central America.

In Albuquerque, a celebration of Mexican independence will be held Monday at the National Hispanic Cultural Center, 1701 4th Street SW, from 5 to 8 p.m.
