Owen Cooper, a 15-year-old actor, has made history by becoming the youngest male winner of an acting Emmy. He received the award for his leading role in the Netflix drama series *Adolescence*, which has gained global acclaim. The ceremony took place at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, where Cooper expressed his surprise at his achievement, stating, "Honestly, when I started these drama classes a couple of years back, I didn’t expect to be even in the United States, never mind here."
Cooper, who hails from Warrington, Cheshire, portrayed Jamie Miller in *Adolescence*, a series that follows a 13-year-old boy arrested for the murder of a classmate. His performance has been widely praised, and he noted, "I was nothing three years ago, and now here I am. Step out of your comfort zone a little, who cares if you get embarrassed."
In his acceptance speech, Cooper acknowledged the collaborative effort behind the show, saying, "It says my name on the statue, but it really belongs to all of the people who worked on the show." He also shared his gratitude for the support from his family and friends back home, adding, "It means so much to me."
The *Adolescence* team also celebrated additional wins at the Emmy Awards. Director Philip Barantini received the Emmy for outstanding directing, while writers Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham won for outstanding writing in a limited or anthology series. Barantini thanked Netflix for their trust in the project, saying, "To Netflix, thank you for trusting us with this mad idea."
The event, hosted by comedian Nate Bargatze, saw other notable winners, including Seth Rogen's *The Studio*, which set a record for the most wins by a comedy series in a single season, taking home 12 awards. Rogen expressed disbelief at his win, stating, "I could not wrap my head around this happening. I've never won anything in my life."
Cooper's win marks a significant milestone in Emmy history, surpassing the previous record held by Roxana Zal, who won at age 14. Following his Emmy success, Cooper has already filmed scenes for the upcoming BBC drama *Film Club* and secured a role as Young Heathcliff in a new adaptation of *Wuthering Heights*.
