Liberal senators Jane Hume and Dave Sharma have sought to downplay the Coalition’s worst-ever poll result after a “bad week in politics”.

The Coalition’s worst ever primary vote in the history of Newspoll came after the week-long controversy surrounding Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price .

Despite the decline in public support, Ms Hume and Mr Sharma said the opposition has time to regroup and develop a credible alternative government.

Ms Hume told Sky News the plunge was “not surprising” after a bruising election loss and a week of infighting, but said it highlighted the need to reconnect with voters.

“Polls come and polls go. Polls are good, polls are bad. However, what I will say is that this isn’t surprising, coming off the back of a pretty poor election result,” Ms Hume said.
