For those motorists who feel a tad self-conscious about giving their car a nickname akin to Herbie the Love Bug, there's no need to worry. Almost half of Brits have confessed to this endearing habit when it comes to their vehicles and there are some touching reasons behind it: and men and women both seem to love Babe.

A study by Aviva revealed that 49 per cent of drivers affectionately give their cars pet names, with the reasons ranging from simple habit to humour and sentimental value. The insurance firm released a list of the top 10 most popular names, along with two other tables sorted by gender.

The name Babe topped the chart as the most favoured choice among all drivers, followed closely by Betty, Daisy, Ruby and Pearl.
