Boulder and Weld county locals can break bread, Erie-style, at the 23rd Biscuit Day this weekend.

From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, the free event will feature biscuits, gravy and a homemade stew contest. Briggs Street will also host craft booths, historic photos and live music by local bluegrass band the Weld County Ramblers.

Biscuit Day first started in the 1890s as a seasonal send-off to Erie miners heading back to work, always taking place in late summer or early fall. The town’s mines closed during the summer months because the type of coal — bituminous coal — they produced breaks down in the heat, according to Biscuit Day co-chair Nancy Gruber. The festival eventually vanished along with the coal mines, before beginning again in 2002.
