SCARBOROUGH, Maine — State police are investigating a deadly crash Saturday night on Interstate 295 in Cumberland.
Emergency dispatchers received multiple reports around 9:30 p.m. that evening reporting a vehicle driving erratically in the southbound lane near mile marker 45 in Richmond, the Maine Department of Public Safety said Monday in a news release.
State police located the vehicle, a Jeep Wrangler, near mile marker 16 in Yarmouth and attempted to stop them.
State safety officials said the driver instead fled the area at a high rate of speed, leading to a police pursuit that ended when the Jeep veered off the right side of the roadway at mile marker 13 in Cumberland, crashed in a wooded area and then ignited.
