DES MOINES, Iowa —
Iowa's newest senator was sworn in Monday morning.
Democrat Catelin Drey won a special election last month , breaking the GOP supermajority in the state senate.
Drey represents Iowa Senate District 1, which includes Sioux City. She takes over for former Republican Sen. Rocky De Witt , who died of cancer in June.
Drey says she's already hearing from constituents on issues concerning child support and water quality, and that she's looking forward to working with Republicans, especially to address funding in public schools and gun violence.
"I'm perhaps unjustly optimistic about what the session in 2026 holds, but I am really excited to get to work with my Senate Democratic colleagues and do what we can to improve the lives of Iowans," Drey said.
