U.S. officials are advising Americans to reconsider any planned trips to Nepal due to ongoing violence and civil unrest. Last week, the State Department issued a Level 3 travel advisory for the Asian nation, home to many of the world’s highest mountains.

A Level 3 advisory is the second-most serious in the department’s four-tier scale.

In the advisory, the State Department cited demonstrations in the country from Sept. 8-9 that turned violent. The agency warned that the protests led to deaths and injuries. Local authorities declared curfews in major cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara, but have since lifted those curfews.

U.S. government employees are being advised not to travel outside the Kathmandu Valley at this time.
