MADISON, Wis. (WBAY) - Wisconsin consumer officials say more than 4 million people nationwide are affected by a data breach at a credit reporting and monitoring company.

The list includes more than 69,000 people in Wisconsin.

TransUnion reported the data breach happened on July 28. It said Social Security numbers and birth dates were accessed.

TransUnion is one of the nation’s big three credit bureaus.

Consumer First Alert has heard from viewers who are receiving letters notifying them about the data breach.

The notices will come by postal mail. Scammers may try to take advantage with email or text notifications -- do NOT click on links.

TransUnion is offering free credit monitoring to people whose information was affected.
