Following more than a decade of calls for affordable housing at the site of the former Montreal Hippodrome, a group in charge of getting the project off the ground is aiming to have the first units move-in ready within the next two years.

At a news conference Monday, the federal government and the City of Montreal announced a combined $320 million of additional funding for the first phase of the Hippodrome project, which includes the construction of 2,250 of the 20,000 housing units promised by the city.

The new funding will mainly serve for the construct of the wastewater management and drinking water infrastructure needed for the new homes.
