LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - A restoration of the Michigan State Capitol’s glass floor is drawing visitors both in person and online.

Following the successful restoration of the Capitol’s inner dome in 2023, work has now begun on restoring the historic glass floor.

Originally installed in 1878, the floor features 976 plate glass tiles framed by cast iron.

While eight other U.S. state capitols have similar glass floors, Michigan’s is the largest and most complete of its kind.

As the restoration progresses, social media posts about the project have generated significant interest, with thousands engaging online to celebrate the preservation of this iconic structure.

Recent discoveries revealed that nearly 700 of the tiles are not original, likely replaced following a fire on the ground floor
