A fire in Manchester, New Hampshire, that forced two people to jump from a third-floor window was caused by the improper disposal of smoking materials, fire officials said Monday.

About 100 firefighters battled the blaze on Sullivan Street on Friday, Manchester Fire Chief Ryan Cashin said.

According to the Manchester Fire Department, the two people who jumped were critically hurt and rushed to the hospital. As of Monday, both remain hospitalized in Boston; one in critical condition, one stable. One firefighter and three police officers also suffered minor injuries during the response. Several pets died in the fire.
