A man accidentally fired his AR-15-style rifle through the ceiling of his apartment in Groton Sunday night, seriously injuring a woman in the apartment above, according to police.

It happened at the Phoenix Park Apartments on Long Hill Road around 10:50 p.m.

When officers arrived, they found the victim's boyfriend and two neighbors trying to use a makeshift tourniquet on the wound to the woman's right leg. The victim had lost a lot of blood, police said.

She was rushed to the Lawrence & Memorial Hospital and underwent emergency surgery for life-threatening injuries, according to police. She remained in the Intensive Care Unit on Monday.
