Alberta plans to add a marker to provincial driver’s licences to indicate citizenship in what Premier Danielle Smith said was an effort to ease access to services and maintain the integrity of elections.
Smith and Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction Minister Dale Nally made the announcement in Calgary on Monday.
The citizenship marker will be added to all new and renewed drivers licences and ID cards starting in fall 2026, with Smith saying she saw the addition as addressing three problems.
