GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) - Adult zebra mussels have been detected in the Colorado River and a nearby lake in Grand Junction, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) announced Monday.

Officials were first made aware of the possibility of adult zebra mussels on Aug. 28. That was when suspected veligers - the tiny larval stage of zebra mussels - tested positive for zebra mussel DNA. They were collected from West and East Lake, west of 31 Road within the Wildlife Area section of James M. Robb-Colorado River State Park. During a follow-up survey on Sept. 2, staff found adult zebra mussels in the lake.

Surveys were conducted in the side channel, where water from the lake is released before flowing into the Colorado River, CPW stated. During one of those surveys, more suspected adult zebra mussel
