The acclaimed musical "Dreamgirls" will return to Broadway in the fall of 2026. Producers announced the revival on Monday, revealing that Camille A. Brown will direct and choreograph the production. Brown is a five-time Tony Award nominee and made her Broadway directorial debut in 2022 with the revival of "for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf." She is also recognized as the first Black woman to direct and choreograph a Broadway play since Katherine Dunham in 1955.

Brown's recent work includes choreography for the revival of "Gypsy," which starred Audra McDonald, and Alicia Keys' "Hell’s Kitchen." The new production of "Dreamgirls" is being produced by Sonia Friedman, Sue Wagner, John Johnson, and Tony-winning actress LaChanze. Friedman previously produced the British debut of "Dreamgirls" in London, which featured Amber Riley as Effie White. LaChanze was part of the original Broadway ensemble in 1987.

The casting for the revival has not yet been announced. A worldwide talent search is underway to find the leading trio of Effie White, Deena Jones, and Lorrell Robinson. Auditions will be held in various cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Detroit, Miami, London, Toronto, Mexico City, Amsterdam, Rome, and Paris. The producers are looking for "talented women of all shapes and sizes" to fill these roles.

"Dreamgirls" originally debuted on Broadway in 1981 and has since become a significant part of musical theater history. The show tells the story of a young Black female singing trio's rise to fame and features a book and lyrics by Tom Eyen and music by Henry Krieger. The original production received 13 Tony Award nominations and won six, including Best Lead Actress for Jennifer Holliday.

The musical was also adapted into a successful film in 2006, starring Jennifer Hudson, Jamie Foxx, Beyoncé, and Eddie Murphy. Hudson won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film. Iconic songs from the musical include "And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going," "One Night Only," and "Dreamgirls."

This upcoming revival will mark the first time "Dreamgirls" has been newly directed and choreographed since its last Broadway run in the 1980s. Further details about the production will be announced in the future.
