Oklahoma's top education official says public schools across the state will observe a moment of silence for Charlie Kirk, the conservative activist who was shot and killed at a speaking event.

Republican state schools Superintendent Ryan Walters issued the directive Monday, Sept. 15, saying schools would observe the moment at noon on Tuesday, Sept. 16.

Walters directed the notice to "school superintendents and staff," saying they should ensure students have "a respectful environment for reflection."

Walters described Kirk as someone who promoted conversations on "American exceptionalism, Christianity's role in society and our country’s history, as well as conservative values."
