WIRT COUNTY, W.Va. (WOWK) - Authorities are investigating after a skull was found in Wirt County.

According to the West Virginia State Police, their South Charleston office received a call on Sunday, Sept. 14, from a squirrel hunter who said they had found what appeared to be a human skull over an embankment along Courtney Ridge Road in Wirt County.

Troopers say the WVSP Parkersburg Detachment and their crime scene team responded, along with the county coroner. According to WVSP, investigators found the skull along with some teeth and a suspected small forearm bone.

The bones were sent to the West Virginia State Medical Examiner's Office for further examination.

WVSP says the case remains under investigation at this time.
