DARE COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - Highway 12 on the Outer Banks is closed after high winds on the Marc Basnight Bridge blew off a modular home from its trailer this afternoon.

The Highway Patrol says it happened around 1:40 p.m. when the wide load was about a half-mile from the south end of the bridge near Rodanthe.

Troopers say high shear winds, some 65 to 70 miles per hour, caused the mobile home to overturn, landing on the bridge rails.

Winds are still very high, according to troopers, making the recovery process difficult and dangerous.

All traffic has been removed from the bridge, and they estimate it will remain closed until around 5:30 p.m.
