NORTH CHARLESTON — New charges were announced against one of the defendants in the sweeping federal corruption probe centered on the state’s third-largest city.

Emily Rose Lorenzo, 64, is charged with providing a false statement to the FBI and falsification of records in a federal investigation. The charges are tacked on Lorenzo’s initial charges of wire fraud, bribery and money laundering.

Eight people, including three North Charleston councilmen, were swept up in the federal investigation that uncovered schemes of extortion, bribery and kickbacks. All but two defendants have pleaded guilty to their involvement, except Lorenzo and Councilman Mike Brown , who is set to go to trial in November, according to court documents.
