MONCKS CORNER — A Berkeley County Sheriff’s deputy has been hospitalized after a driver struck them in a work zone, according to police.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol arrested Jose Maria Zuniga after the accident. The deputy is expected to recover from what the sheriff’s office said was a “100% preventable” crash.

Zuniga has been accused of driving under suspension, having an open container, driving too fast for conditions, endangering a highway worker in a work zone with no resulting injury and endangering emergency service personnel.

The deputy, who was not identify, had been assigned to a traffic detail for Banks Construction on I-26.
