Hugh Freeze knows what it’s like to compete against a team he used to be a part of and in front of fans who used to cheer him on.

During his third season at Liberty in 2021, he returned to Oxford for a late-season game against Ole Miss. That game was five years after Freeze resigned from his job as the Rebels’ head coach in the midst of scandals around recruiting and personal misconduct from Freeze.

After Liberty lost to Ole Miss in Freeze’s return, he was emotional when asked about what going back to Oxford meant to him. Now at Auburn, he’s using that experience to help mentor Jackson Arnold ahead of his return to Oklahoma, a place where he played for the first two years of his college career.

“That whole week, it was a challenge for me not to think about some of that,” Freeze said o
