Donald Trump was hit with a Community Note after telling reporters that “300 million people died last year from drugs,” a figure that would amount to nearly 90 percent of the entire U.S. population. Speaking at Morristown Airport in New Jersey, Trump made the remark while responding to a question about Venezuela’s president calling a U.S. strike on a boat illegal.
The Community Note quickly flagged the claim as impossible. Only about 3.3 million people die annually in the United States from all causes combined, and drug overdoses account for roughly 100,000 to 110,000 deaths per year. Globally, just 62 million people died in 2024 in total—making Trump’s statement off by orders of magnitude.
