KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Before it closed in June of last year, the Gay Street Bridge used to see almost 7,000 cars and trucks roll over it every day according to the City of Knoxville. Once it reopens by the end of the year, it won't be able to bear that weight, that's why City of Knoxville leaders are looking for solutions.
The bridge, which connects downtown Knoxville and south Knoxville has been closed for more than a year after a routine TDOT inspection showed a critical issue. Repairs are currently being done and it will reopen to cyclists and walkers by December 31.
