The U.S. Coast Guard appointed a new commander for the Great Lakes District that includes Northwest Indiana and facilitates the movement of raw materials to the Region's steel mills.

U.S. Coast Guard Rear Adm. Russell E. Dash relieved Rear Adm. Jon P. Hickey as commander of the Great Lakes District Monday.

Vice Adm. Nathan A. Moore, the commander of Coast Guard Atlantic Area & Defense Forces East, presided over the ceremony in Cleveland.

The Great Lakes District covers a 1,500-mile international border with Canada and spans eight states: Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and Wisconsin.
